The 4 Most Common
Web Design Mistakes
Designing
web sites may seem like a daunting task to some people, but it's
not. Just remember some important guidelines and you'll start producing
great web pages in no time, and have lots of fun while you're at
it. Here's what you shouldn't do:
- Inserting
too many images on each page. As if providing little content is
not enough, some designers think it's cool to have pages loaded with
graphics. Unfortunately, such pages often take a long time to load and
eventually annoy users, who aren't likely to ever come back again.
- Having
a confusing, inconsistent interface. A hard-to-navigate, disorienting
site puts off readers and hardly provides any incentive for them to
return. Make it easy for users to navigate through your site by having
a common theme across all pages.
- Using
frames unnecessarily. Web design novices often fall into the trap
of using frames when they're not necessary. The result is often a clumsy,
artificial look. Take a look at some of the best designed sites and
you'll realise that most of them don't use frames! Only use frames when
you have a good reason for them.
- Using
too much looping animation. Looping animation, when properly used
can add subtle touches to a web page. Too much of it, however, can become
a constant distraction for readers, making them focus on your animation
rather than your content! It also prolongs the time it takes for a page
to download. Have you ever seen web pages that display that irritating
mailbox with a bird's head popping in and out of it? Not cool.
